Mod Lang – “TV Star b/w 3+1”

While everyone else is flipping through holiday singles, I’m warding off the snow with the summertime glow of late season power pop. The debut single from Detroit’s Mod Lang positions the band well among the new crop of crunch ’n crooners, feeling like a kindred spirit to Uni Boys, Billy Tibbals, and, on the flip side, the garage bite of The Gnomes. The A-side is a wide-eyed strummer with the ‘70s in its hair. While the band has an obvious love for Memphis’ favorite sons of strum, there’s less Big Star than Phil Seymour in their sound. “TV Star” balances a love for pop hooks with the nagging scratch of punk, a dichotomy I’m constantly looking for in power pop newcomers. The flip slips a little closer to the Nuggets bin, feeling fueled by their Motor City roots and turning up the snottiness with a chugging beat and a Kinks meets Richard & The Young Lions sound. The band takes on both guises with ease and it’s gonna be fun to see where they go from here. The new single’s out now from Just Add Water Records.
