Midding – .44 EP

A noise-pop banquet from Cardiff-based quintet Midding finds the band embracing both ends of that spectrum. Where the term often just ropes in indie pop upstarts who want to sprinkle a little fuzz n’ freakout on top of their hooks, Midding push far beyond just a little fuzz. The band dips into the EP with crusted intent, but by the time they get to “Nuisance” they prove they can pull off the scrubbed VU meets Modern Lovers sway just as well. It’s the downward slope that gives their noise caveats some credence though, and they dial up the din on “For A Little While,” a hypnotic dirge that swaddles collaged vocals in angular itch until it breaks like a fever into a Spacemen chug. Dig further and the band burns off any hit of fuzz for the daybreak bliss of “Sunshine” and the winding, damaged psychedelia of the title track, “.44,” a track tied up in the mythologies of Berkowitz, The Process Church, and its judgement prophecies. The band finds a perfect harmony in the EP format, never dwelling too long on one sound, but making the record feel like a gnarled odyssey all the same. The EP is out now from Tough Love.
