Jeffrey Alexander & The Heavy Lidders – Bootlegs

It’s been a little while since RSTB faves The Heavy Lidders have graced the site, but seeing as we’re embarking on the anniversary of them tearing down DITV3 with a searing “Dark Star,” it’s time to rectify that defiit. The band has had a few excellent live offerings of late, not to mention a full release that helped buffet their recent EU tour from Feeding Tube / Cardinal Fuzz. The live cuts have them fully in the zone, though. The excellent Doom & Gloom From The Tomb have posted a bootleg of the band from the recent tour, gumming up the gravity at Stoke-on-Trent with a dub-heavy set that slides into Sun Ra. The set features Aaron Dooley on bass.
Elsewhere, the band offers up the 4th installment of their Snailhook Tapes, with a live recording from Mama Tried that pairs Träd, Gräs & Stenar with an unexpectedly shredded cover of The Guess Who classic, “American Woman.” I laughed recently hearing this song slipped into a 4th of July playlist among other “American” nodding cuts, feeling it might not be conveying quite the message the small town fireworks staff were going for, but hell why not? The band has always had muddled explanation of whether or not it’s an outright anti-war tune, but it’s always felt like one. The Heavy Lidders give it their all, returning the song to its improvised roots and it’s bootleg to bandstand haze. You can grab the release over at their Bandcamp and the Stoke set at Doom & Gloom.
