Jeff Tobias – “Gimme Coherence”

Another perennial favorite resurfaces today with the announcement of a new solo album from Jeff Tobias (Modern Nature, Sunwatchers). Tobias’s last solo record moved the needle closer to pop than ever before, squaring dazzling arrangements and plentiful hooks with Jeff’s winking, barbed lyricism. The new record continues to capture the magic of the first. Opening single, “Gimme Coherence” pulls from quite a few corners of his catalog, kicking in with a restrained synthpop patter but shaking off the decorum as the track wears on. The second half explodes into sax squalls and cathartic cookdowns that would not have been out of place on a Sunwatchers album. The duality dynamic ties into the albums themes of hope in the face of staggering odds, of waking daily to news that makes you want to scream. The song slips its rallying cries between the rhythms, moving body in mind in a neon-rimmed explosion. “Gimme Coherenece” might be the anthem that 2025 needs most, a reassurance that you’re not delusional, that there are others along for the ride, and that it’s definitely time for collective action. As the song instructs, “Buckle Up.” The new record, One Hundredfold Now in This Age, is out October 17th.
