Go Kurosawa – “autowalk”

Waking up to some great news among my catchup on last week’s break. It’s been three years since Kikagaku Moyo took an indefinite hiatus, leaving fans with an ache for more. In the interim, the band’s label, Guruguru Brain, has continued to help heal the hurt with a wealth of new material, and the group’s Tomo Katsurada has released a solo EP in collaboration with visual artist Shoko Otake. This week Go Kurosawa offers up the first single from a debut solo LP as well. The Kikagaku Moyo drummer and Guruguru labelhead shifts slightly from the band’s psychedelics, working in a less structured manner. The first single slinks towards Kosmiche, buffeted by a bed of rhythm that burbles with a delightful insistence. The song thrives on repetition and vapor trails of brass, with Kurosawa lacing in vocals just below the surface. It feels like a kindred spirit to works from label standout Maya Ongaku, capturing the same languid, aqueous auras that the band has made their specialty. The single pops up on the new record, Soft Shakes, out soon from Guruguru Brain.
