Franklin’s Mint – “Dying In The ’80s”
It’s always hard to keep up with the onslaught of releases from the Sunburned circle, but I’d always recommend keeping their feed on alert. Among a barrage of live recordings (which are as solid as ever), the band is known to slip out studio work or two in there without much notice. This new one finds the band behind Phillip Franklin in his Franklin’s Mint guise. Often a reconfigured vision of Sunburned, this newest finds Phillip with the Mass crew, including Adam Langellotti, Gary War, John Moloney, Sarah Gibbons, Rob Thomas, Shannon Ketch, Kyrssi Battalene and Angus Leslie, on one side of the LP, turning his gnarled missives into dented classics. The other side of the LP finds Franklin back in Australia, where he’s made a new home for a number of years. A whole new host of locals back him up, giving the record a distinct divide that’s still tied by Franklin’s tough-knuckled missives. The new record, Depression Era Ultra High Frequency, is out now direct from the Sunburned Source.
