Fazed On A Pony – “The Perfect Swan”

Another superb single from NZ’s Fazed On A Pony popped up at the end of the week. The work of songwriter Peter McCall, the band feels less in line with the indie pop aura that’s often emanating from the country and their Aussie neighbors, and more akin to the contemplative Americana seeping out of the Southern US these days. “The Perfect Swan” opens up the new album, an immediately tender moment that tries its best to wrap its wounds in soft strums and McCall’s plaintive vocals. The record calls back to a heyday of crossover indie and country voices, playing with the pasts of Pavement, Silver Jews, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, a modern mediation on their longstanding legacies. The new record, Swan, is out January 23rd from meritorious Records.
