Cochemea – “Ancestros Futuros”

Another return of an RSTB fave today as Cochemea Gastelum pops into the news with the third and final installment in his ancestral trilogy. Extending the work of his last two LPs, the third finds Cochemea once again tracing the lines between heritage and history. The title track from the upcoming Ancestros Futuros explores themes of Cochemea’s Yaqui heritage, a song connected to the land via tales of Yaqui midwives, built on the hope that future generations would one day rise and reclaim the land. Imbued with the fire of Eddie Harris and Yusef Lateef, Cochemea melds rhythm and roil, songs that dig deep into generational scars and inherited celebrations. The song bubbles on Cochemea’s usual stew of polyrhythms, swerving through funk and jazz with omnivorous joy. The new album, Vol. 3, Ancestros Futuros, is out September 26th from Daptone.
