The Sleeves – “Come On Man”
Last year’s excellent new album from Modern Nature found the band restructuring. After paring down from the large ensembles that proliferated in Jack Cooper’s studio under the name, the band whittled down to four, with the addition of Tara Cunningham to the core lineup. Jack and Tara had crossed paths before, releasing a tape under the name The Sleeves on Mossy Tapes, an instrumental that was perforated with patience. The duo reunites under the name for a new record on 12xU this year, bringing the same soft touch as the tape, but expanding their sound into something more akin to pop. Mind you, the pop world of The Sleeves isn’t a raucous affair, with a downcast, meditative air, the band evokes the soft smoke curls of April Magazine, Cindy, and labelmates Lewsberg (or their own offshoot The Hobknobs). The first single, “Come On Man” is a beautifully downturned amble through guitar and voice, a calm little companion to last year’s Heat Warps. The eponymous new album is out May 8th from 12xU.
