Whitney Johnson, Lia Kohl, Macie Stewart – “dawn | pulse”

A bit of a departure from the steady stream of jazz that’s flowed from International Anthem over the last few years, this collaborative album brings together Whitney Johnson (Matchess, Winged Wheel), Lia Kohl (Honestly Same), and Macie Stewart (Finom, Ohmme), in a record of sweeping instrumentals that weave classical, folk, and drone. Debut single “dawn | pulse” finds light between the artists’ stings, with the three creating an evocative trio of cello, viola, and violin. The song moves well beyond the average string trio, though. Vocals are layered into the mix, wordlessly entwining in ways that wrap more like fog than sentiments. There are some hints back to Johnson’s work as Matchess, but with the addition of Kohl and Stewart, this becomes a much more symbiotic affair; a moving celestial body caught to tape. The new album, Body Sound, is out March 20th from International Anthem.
