Chris Forsyth’s WHAT IS NOW – “Both/And”
Following a run of East Coast dates, Chris Forsyth’s new outfit WHAT IS NOW debuts a new album this week. The trio brings together Forsyth with Bark Culture members John Moran and Joey Sullivan, pushing away from the taught visions of BASIC and the scuffed tangles of his solo work for a jazz vision that delves through the Chicago exploratory ideals and post-rock rubbings. The new record is brought to light with opener “Both/And,” a nearly 25 minute piece that showcases the outfit’s prowess from the outset. The players push and prod one another, tumbling through rhythm, slicing at jagged phrasing, and dissolving into ambient abstractions. They paint over the piece in strong hues, tying jazz and rock into nodules of fusion in the process. The new record, Both/And, is out February 20th from Chris’ label Algorithm Free.
