Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection – “Rowan Tree”
Longtime RSTB fave Spencer Cullum (Echolalia, Shrunken Elvis) announces a new album today. The third in his Coil Collection series finds Cullum embracing the damp chill of English winter, despite having jumped the Atlantic and dug deep into the warmth of Nashville scene over the past few years. The album opener embraces the record’s lean into nature, a hushed tale of woolen warning in which a tree exacts its revenge on greedy men, just the kind of ecological odyssey we need these days. The song, despite the blood in the sap of its verse, comes accross like a haunting lullaby. The push and pull of modern heaviness paired the contrast of musical comfort remains a central theme (along with nature) to the new album and “Rowan Tree” opens things up nicely. The song is paired with a stop motion illustration video by Gaia Alari that adds to the song’s sinister allure. The new record, Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection 3, is out March 27th from Full Time Hobby.
