GUV – “Let Your Hands Go”
I was elsewhere yesterday, but that’s no excuse to miss out on an essential new single from the always excellent Ben Cook. Tacking another stylistic shift to a name change, Cook shortens Young Guv (formerly Young Governor) down to GUV while slipping away from both the garage punk that sent him solo originally and the country air that’s filled his lungs of late. Embracing his UK roots and parentage, “Let Your Hands Go,” slips on the shaggy, ultra-suede glow of Manchester and Britpop. Over a ‘90s crisped n’ crinkled beat, GUV dips the guitars in glam and nestles the vocals in the dry ice of distanced cool. In a time of ‘90s throwbacks from grunge to shoegaze, this one’s dipped in the dedication of an early acolyte, sealed with an authentic zeal. The song slips out on GUV’s new album Warmer Than Gold, out January 30th from Run For Cover.
