Maya Ongaku – “Maybe Psychic”

If you were lucky, Maya Ongaku came close enough to witness them live on their recent US tour. The band has a habit of never quite staying still within their genre journey; evolving from the edges of ambient jazz and folk on their first record towards a synth-greased vision on their second. Propulsion snuck into the psychedelics on Electronic Phantoms, and as they offer up a bonus single, recorded during a jam session on their EU tour, the band wafts into the arms of dub. “Maybe Psychic” slinks into the room on gooey keys and rubber room rhythms. It echoes around the humid headspace, a reminder that the band’s malleability is its greatest asset. The midnight morsel is a perfect sendoff to their previous phase.
