The New Eves – “Red Brick”
It seems almost too generous to get new music from The New Eves so soon after their essential debut was released in August. Today the band follows on the album with a double-shot single, two tracks that were both born out of the band unfurling loose studio jams. “Red Brick” leads off the single, a knotted, scarred flurry of guitar backed against tense, circling percussion. The music came together just after the sessions for The New Eve Is Rising, with lyrics added after the band toured to New York this year, using the travels as impetus for the fiery lyrics that threaten to boil over. Both songs find the band pushing through the needle-eye of post-punk and into the kind of tourniquet tight poetry that Patti patented in the ‘70s. The album has already secured them space on the year-end lists, but with new material this strong already in the wings, it feels like The New Eves are one of the most vital voices running these days.
