Six Organs of Admittance / OM / The Holy Mountain Orchestra – “Song for JW”

This one slipped out late on Friday, but it’s a perfect start to the new week. A few months ago John Whitson, the founder and head of the great Holy Mountain Records passed away. The label was a longtime staple of RSTB, with site faves from OM, Blues Control, White Manna, Swiftumz, Moon Duo, James Ferraro, Wooden Shjips, Mammatus, Zodiacs, and more dotting their lineup over the years. Now, as the loss settles into the system, Ben Chasney, Al Cisneros, and a few others have banded together to pay tribute, offering up the haunting, “Song for JW” via Drag City. The song captures the label’s penchant for experimentation, epic scope, and unsettling tones. It’s a fitting tribute to the man who made so many of my favorites possible.
