Maria ja Marsialaiset – “Ajoituksen mestari”

Fonal has been a consistent font of Finnish music for as long as RSTB has existed. Often adrift on psych-folk and experimental winds, the label occasionally scoops up a few harder strains as well. Enter Maria ja Marsialaiset, a four-piece that find their footing between post-punk, grunge, and a German Progressive pound. The band’s latest single, “Ajoituksen mestari” pairs Mary Timony-sized guitar riffs with towering vocals from the band’s Maria Stereo, offering an appeal to fans of Sleater Kinney or latter day torch-bearers like Cable Ties. The cut smacks into the solar plexus, a torrential force that peels away a few layers of psyche before it’s done. The cut crops up on the band’s new record, Hevikuiskaaja (aka “The Heavy Metal Whisperer”), out August 15th from Fonal.
