Mixtape: Spiteful Pop compiled by The Tubs

The Tubs have been on of my indie pop favorites for the last few years. Anyone who’s found themselves facing down the speakers throughout one of their records knows that the band can deliver a good dose of sneer and an even better dressing down. The band walks us through some inspirations for the upcoming new album, Cotton Crown, finding the connective tissue between SZA, The Smiths, Magnetic Fields, and more.
The band gives a little background, “I like lyricists who aren’t full on heels, but have something unlikable, hypocritical or spiteful about them. I especially like these qualities in the context of a pop song. Paul Heaton has always been good at smuggling spite and snark into his tunes, and, in the Housemartins, managed to do so in a political way, which is very unusual. SZA is the contemporary master of lyrical spite, though part of her talent is to present those ugly feeling alongside sympathetic ones: longing, self-effacement, heartbreak. We were lucky enough to play with Antenna – Shogun from Royal Headache’s new band and, in our opinion, the best band on the planet. All of the songs on this playlist, though pretty disparate sonically, share something of this Trojan Horse approach.”
