Silver Synthetic

RSTB faves Silver Synthetic return pulling the sun out of hiding as they crest through the speakers on sanguine strums and salt air. The band’s based in New Orleans, but the’ve alway had the West Coast in their veins, and their sophomore LP, Rosalie does little to scuttle the sentiment. Looser and more limber, the new record strips away even more of the band’s garage roots, skidding solidly through the Cosmic American sun. Their first album laid down a bedrock of driving rhythm, stomping through cuts like “Unchain Your Heart,” and “Out of the Darkness.” This time the band backs down the choogle, looking to jazz and country as the crux of their inspiration, giving songs a suppleness that’s been shaved down in the past. The title track lets the band’s sound curl under an evening glow of guitar dosing the listener with a refined ripple of twang. Stacked harmonies abound, filtering through the haze on “Only Time,” “Choose A Time,” and the album’s sweet lament, “Back Home.”
The group aren’t alone on Rosalie either, bridging in a few friends to the mix, with Nashville luminary Luke Schneider’s pedal steel lighting up a a trio of tracks, and hometown studio head Rex Gregory helping the band fully cross the jazz line on “Cool Blue Night,” with touches of sax and flute. Over the past few years, the band’s debut has been a constant companion in the car and on the turntable. Their sound is imbued with a sense of ease and openness that seeps through the speakers and into the sinews. The band doesn’t let go of that feeling one bit on Rosalie and it looks to join its predecessor as a perennial favorite. Summer’s coming and this one’s going to be an absolute essential as temperatures rise this year.
