Every single that’s wafted out of the upcoming Manzanita from Shana Cleveland has been better than the last. Cleveland springs off the mercurial darkness of her previous LP, finding the uncanny valley where country creeps out of the tombstones and surf sends its ache skyward. There’s a haunted sadness to her works that’s comforting. It hangs like humidity over the sparse of “Walking Through Morning Dew,” aided nicely by the homespun school play aesthetics of the self-directed video. The new record arrives March 10th from Hardly Art.
