Rat Columns – “I Can’t Live On Love”

The last outing from Rat Columns, the Aussie jangle-pop band anchored by David West (Rank/Xerox, Lace Curtain,Total Control) has been a perennial favorite around here and it comes as great news that he’s got a new one on the way, and soon! Candle Power found a way to weave jangle, post-punk, and the darker waters of pop together, though this time the ripples seem to have been smoothed into a tighter pop amalgam that melts power pop into delightful tessellations. “I Can’t Live on Love” is a prime example of the pop alchemy that West is working on Pacific Kiss, full of crisps-cut guitar riffs and plush organ lines. He works the song into a soft-punch that knocks its riff around the brain again and again. The new record features some excellent support from Joey Fishman (New Rose), Raven Mahon (Grass Widow, The Green Child), and Jef Brown (Jackie-O Motherfucker). Pacific Kiss lands February 14th from Tough Love.
