NOW – “The Ballad of Joy Bang”

Playing a little catch up, because this single slipped through the noise a few weeks back and I’d hate to miss it. The upcoming new record from NOW should definitely be on your radar, if it isn’t already. The band, featuring members of RSTB faves Cindy, breaks with their Bay Area brethren, embracing a multi-hued bloom of jangle and shake in stark contrast to Cindy’s more measured softness. The band’s not necessarily checking the stock boxes from the indie pop report card either. Like fellow faves The Smashing Times, NOW has a preference for the more prickly ends of pop, snipping riffs from Television Personalities, Cleaners From Venus, and Orange Juice with a few dalliances with Robyn Hitchcock and his cadre of players. The second single from Now Does The Trick, slips a little psych is the strums, letting the song shiver in their sunburned pop skin. The new LP is out May 16th from Perennial Death / K Recs.
