The Telephone Numbers – “Weird Sisters b/w This Job Is Killing Me”
Yesterday was stuffed to the brim with jangle, but there’s always room for one more, right? With a new single included on the excellent 14 compilation from yesterday, San Francisco indie poppers The Telephone Numbers release their new 7” today as a split between Prefect and Meritorio Records. The b-side is as charming as the flip, which, as I have noted previously adds a soaring cinematic sense with strings and layered harmonies winding up as robust and refined as the band has ever sounded. A bit closer to the cloth of their debut album, the “This Job Is Killing Me” eschews the swells and whistles of “Weird Sisters,” in favor of a straight jangler with a bittersweet heart and a message we can all get behind. “This Job Is Killing Me” is a melancholy salve for day job depression. The band can’t miss and this is already working its way up the list of 2023’s best.
