Maya Ongaku – “Iyo no Hito”

One of my favorite releases from last year was the debut from Japanese trio Maya Ongaku. The band crafted natural environments rooted in folk, hovering between the ambient psych of the West, ‘90s touchstones like Ghost, and ’70s precursors like Fluid. The band returns, still anchored in calm waters, but carving away at the pristine soundscapes with an infusion of vintage electronics and a sun-soaked dose of guitar. The first cut from their new EP pairs softly percolating hand percussion with Moog, Hammond Organ, Juno-06, and drum machines. While the embrace of much less organic elements seems at odds with the band’s previous aesthetic, they weave their relaxed aura into the machines with bio-electric bliss. The new EP, Electronic Phantoms, is out August 30th from Guruguru Brain.
