fling ii
A second outing from Ann Arbor’s fling ii finds the band deep in the cosmic curl, hurling the listener through synth vortices, their guitars soaked in sonic sap. From the first moments of 2, the band sends reverberations around the room, drawing the listener into their chrysalis of sound. “Akin” stretches through embryonic echoes before the band stitches a German Progressive pulse to the album, lapping at Ashra as much as Floyd this time around. The burble ebbs and flows over the album, turning aqueous on “scry” and effervescent on “sloe,” but the band is often at their best when they let the listener just float in the foam, setting them adrift in dream on opener “akin” and centerpiece standout “fenn.”
The latter finds the band wandering close to the current crop of ambient country, letting some softy swayed peddle steel into the mix, sidling up next to SUSS or Luke Schneider territory. “fenn” adds a touch of yearning to the record, reaching out towards the kosmiche expanses with wonder underneath the weight of the heart. 2 sets alight a glow in the band’s songwriting, a beacon that draws listeners in and lets them bounce around the band’s silk sounds with abandon.
