Yasmin Williams feat. Aiofe O’Donovan – “Dawning”

Very nice to hear some new music from Yasmin Williams this morning. The guitarist’s last outing was met with near universal acclaim, and with good reason as it helped usher in a percussive, resplendent fingerstyle sound that taps into a natural splendor. That splendor is on full view in the new video for “Dawning,” the first cut off of an upcoming album that sees her move from Spinster to Nonesuch. The new song pairs her cascading strings with a vocal float from Aoife O’Donovan, with subtle underscoring from Kafari on rhythm bones, and Nic Gareiss’ percussive dancing. The new song swells with joy, a feeling that’s often been present in Williams’ works. Much like contemporaries William Tyler, Hayden Pedigo, and Cameron Knowler, Willams fingerpicked works break with many of her precursors, finding a sound that’s more painterly than the schools of old. With its auburn sunlight hues and dewy aura, “Dawning” paints with sure strokes that circle the soul. The new single is out now on Nonesuch with details to come on a fuller album.
