If you were following along with Weak Signal’s Bandcamp last year, the band had a digital/cassette release for their excellently undersung sophomore album Bianca. A little over a year later the album has been remastered and laid down to LP for a release on Colonel Records. Those unfamiliar might recognize songwriter Mike Bones from his work with Endless Boogie or Soldiers of Fortune, but on Weak Signal Bones is at the helm and wielding heaviness with an appreciation for pop. As I mentioned previously, Bianca sounds like it could have existed in the verdant valley between SST and Touch and Go as ’89 wafted into ’90, or at least like its found solace in those catalogs during its conception. The album chews on the gristle of post-punk and post-hardcore, but it’s beyond them both, merely using the genres as fuel for a more noxious and yet intoxicating mix that gets into the blood with ill intentions.
Few songs embrace the caustic crush better than “Drugs In My System,” a winking hangover heavy that stomps along with leaden shoes and a bleary smear of guitar. As Mike describes it, “I was early to practice and wrote “Drugs In My System” in two minutes in an attempt get a few laughs out of Tran and Sasha. They loved it and it became an actual Weak Signal song. There’s not a lot to say about it, it’s a song about living the roach life, the street life. I hope you can’t relate.” The physical edition of Bianca is out October 15th and if you’re in the area, the band is opening up for Garcia Peoples on quite a few dates this fall.
