Mammatus – “Expanding Majesty”
Somehow its been eight years since California prog purveyors Mammatus have graced the masses with an album, but from the first sounds of Expanding Majesty, it’s been worth the wait. The band has spent the better part of the last decade refining their sound since 2015’s Sparkling Waters, already a favorite around here. They make the jump from their double album tenure at Spiritual Pajamas to Ethan Miller’s Silver Current for the new album, a monolith of psych that’s been built as an ode to “the nearly unbearable overwhelming beauty and energy of creation and existence.” Since no meditation on that muse can be slight, the album sprawls over the contours of two LPs, with no track on the record coming in under the sixteen-minute mark. The album opener and title track sets the tone for the outing — percolating guitars, soaring synths, and a tumbling backbone of rhythm opens the record onto widescreen vistas of prog thickened with a stoner-rock rumble of volume and vibration. The new album is out June 23rd.
