Kieran Hebden & William Tyler – “Darkness, Darkness”

Avatar

It’s pretty hard to ignore this one today and for good reason. A few weeks back William Tyler alluded to a collaboration with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) to excitement and puzzlement. What common ground between Hebden’s electronic mastery and Tyler’s fluid guitar would they traverse? Today half the answer arrives with a surprising cover of The Youngbloods’ “Darkness, Darkness.” The original that appears on the band’s Elephant Mountain LP pairs psychedelic touches with rootsy fiddle work, culminating in a buzzing bit of guitar that’s a perfect springboard for Tyler’s stringwork on this cover. Hebden and Tyler extend their version to a frothy 10+ minute storm that builds from cosmic ripples of synth and guitar to a fuzz-slashed finish that eclipses the original. The new EP, sadly not released under the name Tet & Tyler (missed opportunity) also includes an original called “No Services.” It arrives June 30th from Psychic Hotline.
