Jerry David Decicca – “Long Distance Runner”

I missed out on this one when it popped up a few days back, but I’d be remiss not to mention this excellent new single from Jerry David Decicca. The Texas troubadour has been a longtime favorite around here, but his new record, recorded just prior to a heart operation and framed by familial loss, may be his best yet. The first single, “Long Distance Runner,” with its allusions to the heart, seems like it might have had a shadow of what lay in store, but instead it’s rooted in Murakami and an aura of sun-baked ‘70s country. The song stretches and soaks in the clear-skied heat, doused with background vocals from Eve Searis and supple steel from BJ Cole. It’s a tender turn from Decicca, feeling at home between New Riders and Simon Joyner. The new record, Cardiac Country, is out April 24th from Sophomore Lounge.
