Jeff Tobias – “Self-Portrait In A Convex Mirror”

Jeff’s album was included in my 2022 favorites, and if you missed out, its a pithy pop gem packed with earworms, including this standout single. Back when the single first popped out I noted, “With a new wave burble and bittersweet shading, the song pushes away from some of the more experimental settings in which I’m used to encountering Tobias, finding himself in unlikely company with Business of Dreams, Minks, or Wild Nothing. “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror” arrives on a lightly shuffling beat with synths sparkling around Tobias’ sax, which has been tempered from its usual scorch to an ‘80s gloss.” After most of the year, it still hits hard and now Jeff’s given the song a dizzying video treatment.
