Grave Flowers Bongo Band – “Head In California b/w Autumn”
A nice surprise release today from perennial favorites Grave Flowers Bongo Band. The group’s been letting out singles in a steady stream over the past couple of years and this one finds them tackling a Ted Lucas & The Horny Toads cover on the A-Side. Grave Flowers take the original’s garage grit and let it bake under the West Coast sun a bit, injecting a bit of country sway and a psych exhale to the track. With Ty Segall behind the boards, the band finds the Cosmic curl inside the original’s rough ramble, retaining the throbbing rhythm that drives the song. They pair it with a new original on the flip that finds the band lighting out a bit from their psych-pop comforts. With Laena Myers on violin, the cut also dips into a bit of the Cosmic American stream, raising hopes that this new direction might stick on a long-player as well. The single is out now digitally.
