Gold Dust – “An Early Translation of a Later Work”

An RSTB fave is back on the site today. The last two Gold Dust releases found Stephen Pierce (Ampere, Kindling) branching out from his shoegaze and punk past, turning towards the outsider psych and folk forms that had long permeated his own record collection. Those first two releases also found Pierce going it alone for the most part, solo records that were ensconced in a sense of isolation, but on the band’s upcoming In the Shade of the Living Light, the band become a band proper with Ally Einbinder (guitar, formerly of Potty Mouth), Adam Reid (drums, of Nanny), and Sean Greene (bass, of The Van Pelt) rounding out a proper four piece. The new sound is fuller from the first moments it hits the speakers. While past Gold Dust records weren’t exactly spare, there’s a lightness at play on the first single ““An Early Translation of a Later Work.” The song features the band’s second collaboration with local luminary J Mascis, who adds electric sitar to the cut. The record also features contributions from Gretchen Williams (Kindling), Meghan Minior (Ampere), Josh Robbins (Late Bloomer), and Fred Thomas, with Anthony Saffery (Cornershop) on sitar and Drew Gardner (Elkhorn) on vibraphone. The new record is out May 16th.
