Gerycz/Powers/Rolin – “June”

Avatar

All three players on the upcoming Gerycz/Powers/Rolin LP are heading into at least their second essential album of 2021. Riding high off of recent releases by Powers/Rolin duo and Monocot, the trio announces Lamplighter, their second album together. The set was almost entirely improvised, but that seems hard to grasp from the sparkling presence on “June.” Its a song that feels like it may have always been, a song that found the players. “June” rolls in on ripples of guitar before a shuffle of drums opens things up for Jen’s cascades of dulcimer. There’s a lightness to the song and an ease that befits the summer title. There was a natural force to P/R Duo’s Strange Fortune, and that feeling remains firmly embedded in Lamplighter. The songs move with the grace of leaves shaking in heavy winds, moving in gusty patterns and shaking down a rhythmic rustle that sends soothing waves cascading down the spine. Lamplighter is out September 3rd from American Dreams. Mark your calendars.
