EggS – “Head In Flames”
There hasn’t been enough dust kicked up Stateside for French band EggS. The group’s 2022 debut hung on the speakers around here for a long time, breaking them out into the light after a few years of shrouded EPs and singles. The debut scooped digs through Television Personalities, Eleventh Dream Day, and Game Theory — a wellspring of indie overtures with a quicksilver ripple of brass. The band starts things off for album #2 on a good foot as well, queuing up “Head In Flames,” the kind of cut that would have made Merge and Sub Pop salivate somewhere in the early Aughts. Quivering with a slight twang, butter-soft bouts of brass and a hive of harmonies, the single shifts their sound slightly but retains the propulsion of the debut. Though it feels indebted to a more thickly settled indie era, the cut couldn’t feel more perfect for 2024, a spring-loaded pop puzzle for the listener to pick apart. Between this and that opener from Canadian outfit Scions, it feels lik the sprawling indie ensemble is back and I’m here for it. The band’s new album, Crafted Achievement, is out November 1st from Howlin’ Banana and Prefect Records.
