Daisy Rickman – “Signpost To The Stars”

Though the chatter on this side of the Atlantic is sparse, one of my most anticipated albums of the beginning of 2024 is the wooded folk collection, Howl from Daisy Rickman. With the gravity of Vashti, Bridget, or modern contemporaries like Grace Cummings, Rickman prepares a record that winds through the woods, but shakes off the more fragile connotations of folk. A prime example of her emotional impact, “Signpost To The Stars” takes an acoustic ramble and hangs it on the air like dense fog, cut through with the ghosts of her deep and sonorous vocals. The song, an ode to the passing of loved ones and the idea of death beginning the journey as dust that wraps around the constellations, leads the listener into meditative corners. Each listen lets it tighten its grip on us. The new album, Howl, is out March 20th.
