Bill Nace – “The Giant”

Any familiarity with Bill Nace will probably lead the listener down a host of divergent rabbit holes. The artist has appeared on records with Thurston Moore, Joe McPhee, Dredd Foole, and Samara Lubelski, though he is probably most known for his work with Body/Head. For his second solo outing on Drag City Nace embraces textures and ambience, bending squelch and static into parched moods through looped guitar works with a nice dousing of hurdy gurdy, doughnut pipe, quelle est belle, and taishōgoto. “The Giant” hangs on the air with a queasy unease, feeling like a mapping of the electricity the air moments before calamity comes calling or perhaps the suspended animation of shock following its arrival. The new record, Through a Room, is out November 11th from Drag City.
