Anna Butterss – “Shorn”
The LA jazz offerings just keep getting better this year. After an already incredible release with SML, bassist Anna Butterss queues up their solo debut for International Anthem. The album features SML bandmates Josh Johnson and Gregory Uhlmann, along with Jeff Parker and Ben Lumsdaine. The album, recorded by Chris Schlarb at Big Ego and Ben Lumsdaine at Laundry Works II Recording Services, finds the bassist exploring the same rhythmic intricacies and outer edges of jazz that SML has delivered this year, acting as an excellent companion piece to the group’s Small Medium Large. First single, “Shorn” burbles on an effervescent beat, showcasing Butterss’ propensity for serpentine bass work and silken flute, while bumping against the stop-start of electronics and Josh Johnson’s wicker-woven sax work. The new album, Mighty Vertebrate, is out October 4th from International Anthem.
