Whitney’s Playland – “Long Rehearsal”

The debut from Whitney’s Playland remains a latter day highlight for me, one that came as a sweet surprise in 2023. With some time and two more members, the band has expanded their sound to something a bit fuller than those early pop offerings. The follow-up is a more compact release than their last, but the band packs a pretty solid pop punch into three tracks on the Long Rehearsal EP. I’ve discussed the title track previously, an excellent opening full of wistful jangles and Inna Showalter’s perfectly melancholy delivery. The band doesn’t let up as the EP unfolds, sparring crunch-wrapped riffs with velvet swoons on “Only Daughter,” and ending up the 7” with the bittersweet sighs of “Talk,” one of their most layered looks yet. If the band has eluded you to date, this is a nice entry point, and hopefully just the beginning of the Whitneys’ new era.
