Tony Jay – “Saint Matthew”

Avatar

There’s something nice about ending the day with the warm blanket of fuzz on Tony Jay’s “Saint Matthew.” The San Francisco songwriter Mike Ramos, also a member of concurrent Paisley Shirt band Flowertown, keeps up the enigma, again casting the fictional Jay as shadowy pop shut-in. The song’s delicate melodies are buried under hiss, but it only adds to the junk-shop lullaby appeal of “Saint Matthew.” While the new album features quite a few contemporaries from the area, including Karina Gill (Cindy), Griffin Jones (Galore), Kati Mashikian (Mister Baby), Alexis Harper (Al Harper), & Hannah Lew (Cold Beat), “Staint Matthew” feels largely lonesome save for a few background vocals. The new cassette is out now, again from his home at Paisley Shirt. Let this act as a sigh of relief on a Friday.
