Tonstartssbandht – “Pass Away”

This new record from Tonstartssbandht is shaping up to be their best. While they’ve long touched into the cosmic, flirted with elements of ‘70s jam, and had their eyes set towards epic vistas (especially with 2017’s Sorcerer) the upcoming Petunia puts all the pieces in the right place. Few songs on the album exemplify the crystallization of their sound as much has “Pass Away.” The song is built on the chiming weave of twelve string bliss, shifting time and tone over its run and feeling quite in line with the current crop of Cosmic Americana core. There should be no doubt in laying this next to your Garcia Peoples and One Eleven Heavy records as essentials of a new era of gnarled guitar greats, but the band’s harmonies also call to mind the crystalline psych of Super Furry Animals. Check out the video — a reserved studio take that doesn’t distract from the song’s sweeping grandeur. The brothers White harmonize with autumnal crispness before the song downshifts into exploratory grooves, sweeping the listener along its curves in a waterslide whip of riffs and curls. The new album is out October 22nd from Mexican Summer.
