Tobacco City – “Never On My Mind”

Avatar

I mentioned this single a couple of weeks back when the album went up for pre-order but a new video gives another chance to bring the great Tobacco City to the forefront yet again. With a snippet of one of the album’s country stompers (“AA Blues”) leading in, the band embodies the comedown cool of “Never On My Mind.” Feeling at home in the clip’s bar setting, but draped in enough majesty to properly frame the heartbreak crush of the song, the band present themselves as road-worn country stalwarts. A great deal of the album creates a kind of Gram and Emmy Lou magic, but this one puts the focus on Lexi Goddard’s heavy-hung vocals, letting the song simmer in the glass like liquid solace. Nick Uasalis’ pedal steel is one of the brightest spots in the album and he give the song the glow it deserves. The album is out July 30th from Scissor Tail, and I have to say its quickly crawling up towards my year-end faves.
