The Umbrellas – “Three Cheers”
The SF set is on constant rotation around here, but I have to say that The Umbrellas spend more than a fair amount of time on my speakers than almost any record in the last few years. The band’s debut was a jangled jolt out of a dim n’ dire 2021, and they’re back with round two for Slumberland this winter. The first single, “Three Cheers” finds the band thickening up their sound, bursting from the speakers in pop perfection. Still owing a debt and a half to The Pastels, the new single nods towards undercard indie pop gems from The Weather Prophets, Talulah Gosh, Close Lobsters, and Even As We Speak. The band wears a pop gloss-up well, letting a bass intro crack the seal before the band swerves into a sunshine strum that’s infectious, bandying M/F vocals back and forth like pros. The new album, Fairweather Friend, is out January 26th from Slumberland and Tough Love.
