Much as I’ve always enjoyed the excess and mutability of King Gizz over the years, I’ve had quite the soft spot for their less lauded labelmates The Murlocs. The band’s stuck to their grit-soaked garage R&B, dipped in a psych shakedown for good measure and the first cut from the upcoming Bittersweet Demons doesn’t jettison their hallmarks, just gives ‘em a good shine. The locomotive chug of harmonica gets blown through a half-ton of distortion cake and its hard to ignore the handclap shuffle of the beat behind this one. Throw in a saturated road trip through a ‘90s trapper keeper and I’m pretty sold on the sendofff for the new album. Bittersweet Demons lands June 25th over at Flightless.
