The Living Rainbow – “Hamburg Girl”
If you’ve been trawling through the tape bins at World of Echo and Monorail, there’s a name that keeps popping up among UK DIY. The work of Tom Bryant, whose own imprint INFOrmatiON! has issued four tapes under the name The Living Rainbow. Much like US counterparts The Smashing Times, the band has a particular penchant for the works of Dan Treacy, feeling like equal heirs to The Television Personalities’ kingdom. The tapes are creaky pop curious that mix folk, post-punk, and indie pop into music box reveries made for quiet afternoons and rainy mornings. A standout on the new tape, The Dusty Clock, “Hamburg Girl” represents one of the sunnier moments in his catalog. Driven by a drum machine snap, the song layers strums and sighs among it’s pop embellishments. Feeling like a postcard from the past, the song has all the hallmarks of a long lost Cleaners From Venus cutout, or even an ancient Cure demo left lingering somewhere on dusted attic tapes. The new tape is out now from INFOrmatiON!
