The Bures Band – Birds Nest

Been waiting on this one ever since I caught wind of Stephen Bailey’s new outfit in an interview a while back. Bailey was the frontman of the now-disbanded, and much-beloved desert psych unit Mt. Mountain. His solo records, by contrast, have caught a cross breeze that’s blown him far afield of the heavy dirge of that outfit, coming closer to the cosmic climate of The Byrds and CSNY. That breeze follows him into The Bures Band, who offer up their debut single today. Fleshing out the band to a quartet, Bailey embraces the Americana influences that arose on his last album, G.G. Rider, a true highlight of last year. Looks like The Buses Band may hold that spot on this year’s list, as “Birds Nest” captures an easy amble, touch of twang, and multi-part harmony of a long lost ‘70s country rock gem. There have been more than a few contenders crowding for the Cosmic American crown these days, but few are hitting the sweet spot quite like this. The band’s first single is out tomorrow with a debut album set to land before the end of the year.
