Self Improvement – “Change My Mind”
by Andy
A softer side of Long Beach burners Self Improvement slips out in their new single “Change My Mind.” The band often digs their hooks into the hackles of early punk, with a lean into Suburban Lawns, Wire, and The Slits. On “Change My Mind,” though, they let the tension bubble under the surface, stitching the insistent beat to the chime of guitars and inquisitive keys. The exterior is smooth as silk, but there’s more than a little menace in Jett Witchalls’ delivery, challenging the listener with a simmering defiance that feels right out of the Fabulous Stains’ playbook. The band’s new album, Syndrome, is out June 13th from Feel It Records.
