Scott Hirsch – “Drifter’s Wife (JJ Cale Cover)”

Excited to see news of this compilation compiled by Petal Motel’s Lara Bennett filtering out over the weekend. The Bandcamp-exclusive compilation rounds up 32 artists with proceeds going to National Network of Abortion Funds. Compassion: a petal motel compilation for human rights features a wide array of favorites from around here, including Bobby Lee, Golden Brown, SUSS Gold Dust, Seawind of Battery, The Modern Folk, and Wes Tirey. One of the standouts for me has been this cover of JJ Cale’s “Drifter’s Wife” from Scott Hirsch. Hirsch has often had a penchant for landing on Cale’s narcotized boogie, but here he does justice to his ‘80s work, giving the Grasshopper standout a breezy air with a bit thicker ambiance than the original. Petal Motel has been a welcome new voice in Cosmic Americana, folk, and ambient country and this collection brings together an amazing cross-section of those voices for a good cause. You can pre-order the comp now, or buy the cover painting used for the album artwork to donate.

The National Network of Abortion Funds builds power with members to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic, and reproductive justice. The compilation is out March 3rd.
