Ryley Walker & David Grubbs – “The Madman From Massachusetts In An Empty Bar”

Good news for guitar benders today with the announcement of a new release from Ryley Walker’s Husky Pants label. Walker’s no slouch in the collaboration department, having worked out duos over the years with Daniel Bachman, Charles Rumback, Bill MacKay, Kendra Amalie, Steve Gunn, and Kikagaku Moyo. Now he adds another luminary to that list, pairing up with David Grubbs for a set that sees the two trading amp-fried experimental goodness that comes on like a storm on the mountain. The first taste is the album closer, the menacingly titled “The Madman From Massachusetts In An Empty Bar.” With a face-full of feedback and a bellyful of droned menace, the duo carve out a harrowing shape over the almost eight-minute piece. The album, A Tap On The Shoulder, is out September 3rd. I recommend getting it in the ol’ Bandcamp cart.
