Mohammad Mostafa Heydarian – “Bàyeh Bàyeh”

A flurry of strings today from Kurdish/ Iranian tanbur player, Mohammad Mostafa Heydarian. The new album finds the artist honed in, not necessarily eschewing the the improvisational air of his last album, but working in classical themes with a ear towards embellishment. “Bàyeh Bàyeh” buzzes around the listener, pushing the percussive patter of the tanbur’s strings against the methodical measure of Morteza Rezâei’s dohool (cylinder drum). While precision was in his mind on the new album, it’s also very much rooted in the ideals of its title, Noor-e Vojood, or the light of existence — a record driven by the joy and jubilation that music brings to life. That joy is at the heart of “Bàyeh Bàyeh,” dancing around the listener in rippling waves. The new album is out March 7th a co-release between Centripetal Force, Cardinal Fuzz, and Radio Khiyaban.
